The Letter Carved On Our Hearts

Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This letter is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

2 Corinthians 3:3

Few people today write letters.  The technology generation knows little of the thrill of receiving a written letter that details the thoughts and sentiments of the sender. In the past, a letter served as a somewhat satisfactory substitute for the presence of the one who sent it. Its physical presence could be held and embraced by the receiver, knowing that this same letter  was first held by the sender. Recognition of the hand writing style was another reminder of the one who penned it. Thoughts were usually thorough and deep.  This contrasts greatly with the brief text of today, full of abbreviations and symbols: LOL, or BFF, common phrases known to all and often used for superficial expressions.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that believers are better than written letters.  Written letters can be a beautiful thing but they are, in the end, just words.  Words can be used to tickle the ears or even deceive. God writes on the flesh of the human heart by the Holy Spirit (Jeremiah 31:32). Our true hearts are revealed by our actions. This is the fruit of the letter God has written in our hearts. The fruit of a surrendered and obedient life is full of love, good deeds, compassion and grace. They are not just words on a letter but truth put into action.

Personal reflection: Has God written His letter on your heart? Does the fruit of your life reveal this? As others read your life, what do they learn of God?
