But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 2 Corinthians 3:16
The custom and use of a veil has a long and varied history. Today we see it used most often in the wedding ceremony. The symbolism of the veil in a traditional wedding focuses on the purity of the bride and her modesty. The removal of the veil, as the ceremony concludes, reveals her beauty in its fullest and is the symbol of her openness and full revelation to her husband.
The two most significant uses of the “veil” in Biblical context relate first to Moses’ use, to cover his glowing face, after he was in the presence of God to receive the ten commandments and secondly, in the tabernacle separating the Holy of Holies where God’s presence dwelt among the people.
In 2 Corinthians Paul refers to the first instance and use when the function of the veil was to hide the glory of God because the people could not bear to look on it. Here we see God’s laws revealed but his glory hidden. Paul tells us that the veil symbolized the covering of their minds to shield them from understanding God and served as a hardener of their hearts so they did not know Him. In Acts 15:21 we are reminded that this went on even as the laws of Moses were preached in every city on every Sabbath for many generations.
The secret to having the veil lifted is the same today as it was then. It is lifted by belief in the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This is how we can understand the new covenant that replaces the old laws. Just as the veil of the temple was torn to allow access to God’s presence, Jesus’ blood poured out for us removes the veil covering our hearts so that we can know God fully.
Personal reflection: Do you believe in Christ as the Messiah? Praise God that Christ has removed the veil from our hearts so that we can fully know Him.
