No, It’s Not Just About You

But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others

with a weaker conscience to stumble.

I Corinthians 8:9

It’s great to be free to do as you wish. Believers have total freedom in Christ. Obedient to the Word, conscience clear-do whatever you want. Paul throws a big damper on that freedom however. He brings up the superiority of love once again. He says that love strengthens, but freedom, in the wrong instance, can tear down.

Why do I have to be careful with my freedom – because of love. In Jewish thinking food offered to idols was reprehensible. Even believers, who understood that Christ brought a new perspective to the Law, had a hard time changing old habits. Those who could sort it all out, realizing that idols were no gods at all, found freedom to eat meat offered to them.
As Paul pointed out- we can’t win God’s approval by what we eat – or don’t eat. How freeing that is! But wait, what about the brother or sister who hasn’t reached that level of freedom yet? That’s where the love takes over. It is wrong to lead them to do something against their conscience. Time and truth will lead them but it is a sin to hurry them for your freedom’s sake.

Personal reflection: Is there an area where you are called to be patient and loving because of a weaker brother or sister? Pray for their growth, don’t push them.
