Love the Animals

The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are always cruel. Proverbs 12:10

Wikipedia lists over 30 animals that have been domesticated as pets in countries around the world, including dogs, cats, pigs, donkeys, ducks, llamas, mice, fish and the hedgehog. Many people love animals and their lives are enriched by a close relationship with them, even if others don’t quite get the attraction.

Today’s verse gives an indication of God’s standard of care for animals. The verse contrasts the godly person – one who is just, righteous, and lawful – with the wicked person – one who lives an ungodly life that is morally bankrupt. The point is to show that there is a distinct difference in the way the godly and ungodly live their lives and it can be seen in their behavior, even in the way they treat animals.

God loves and cares for the animal world He created, whether they are domesticated or not. He desires that they be well treated and well cared for. For domesticated animals of every kind it is within the power and responsibility of man to see that it is done. For wild animals it is more difficult but not without options.

The verse doesn’t mean to suggest that the wicked (morally bankrupt) never care for their animals, indeed we know that many do. But in contrast with the godly, their hearts are far from God and their actions are often cruel.

Caring for animals is part of our stewardship over the world. God loves them and we should to.

Personal reflection:

Have you been faithful to God’s call to care for the animals? Be kind to them, they are God’s creation too.
